At Tai Tokerau Emergency Housing Charitable Trust (TTEHCT), we believe that everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Our kaupapa is simple yet powerful: to empower Northland’s homeless community with dignity, compassion, and the tools to rebuild their lives. We are committed to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to social justice principles, ensuring equity and fairness in every decision.
TTEHCT was born out of the WEAR group (Whangarei Emergency Accommodation Response), whose members signed a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2004 alongside community organisations concerned about homelessness in Whangārei.
In 2005, a collaborative research project between government and community organisations confirmed what many already knew: there was a critical need for supportive short-term accommodation for individuals and whānau in our region.
With the backing of local churches, TTEHCT was formally registered as an Incorporated Society in September 2006. Since then, we have grown to become the specialist provider of temporary emergency accommodation in Whangārei, recognised for our kaupapa-driven, strengths-based approach.
Housing Northland’s homeless from crisis to confidence. We are more than a shelter. We are a bridge, from uncertainty and hardship, to stability, independence, and hope.
Guided by kaupapa Māori values and grounded in community, we uphold:
Love and compassion in everything we do
Building strong relationships and belonging
Respect and care for the dignity of others
Practical support and encouragement
Working together for the wellbeing of all
We walk alongside individuals and whānau without housing, offering pathways to stability, confidence, and independence. With live-in support, our strengths-based approach goes beyond immediate shelter to create safe, nurturing spaces where people can regain dignity and rebuild their futures.
A personal, tailored approach that meets people where they are.
Stability and compassion, not just a roof overhead.
Safe spaces to recover, reflect and grow.
A focus on restoring hope and confidence for lasting independence.
